From Football to Foodie - Meet Bob Baumhower
In the late 1970’s, Bob Baumhower couldn’t have dreamed he’d one day make a career in hospitality.
It was his very unhospitable reputation as a defensive powerhouse that made Bob a five-time Pro Bowl nose tackle, record-shattering legend in his ten years with the Miami Dolphins.
In 1979 , “Sunday foes but Monday friends” Joe Namath and Richard Todd of the Jets partnered with Bob in a Ft. Lauderdale hot spot dubbed “Bachelors III.” With a Planet Hollywood “everybody who’s anybody” celebrity crowd – it was a smash and very likely the first restaurant venture by a pro athlete.
A year later, a Miami team-mate invited him to lunch over Buffalo Wings – a dish Bob had never heard of before. He was hooked.
In 1981 the Alabama local returned to his college turf at the University of Alabama and opened his first Wings restaurant. Over the years, the part sports bar, Crimson Tide archive and relaxed dining over stellar food – Baumhower’s and Bob’s Victory Grille have gained critical acclaim and business success among the best casual restaurants in Alabama.
Today Dauphin’s becomes the latest ingredient in the Baumhower 13- restaurant gumbo known as Aloha Hospitality. Each has a strong dash of Bob’s zealous attention to detail and passion for perfection. From the Italian glass chargers on the tables to artwork on the walls, to wait staff uniforms and design of the chairs, Bob’s hand is at work. The CEO who signs his emails “Head Fry Cook” is as likely to be found washing dishes or garnishing a cocktail as greeting a guest at the door.
Bob makes his home on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay with wife Leslie and is the proud father of four children.
Aloha Hospitality International includes Baumhower’, Bob’s Victory Grille, Bimini Bob’s, and Dauphin’s. A Cuban-themed speakeasy – La Floridita - will join Dauphin’s downtown later this spring.
