John’s Famous Angel Hair Slaw –When a bottle of John’s Slaw & Salad Dressing arrives to the table to season a Dauphin’s dish, there’s a smile from those who’ve grown up savoring this Alabama staple. Greek immigrant John Proferis first concocted his unique blend of spices, herbs and oils in the mid-1940’s – adding “angel hair” sliced cabbage on a plate at the legendary John’s in Birmingham. Café customers dosed the dressing themselves. The thin-slice cabbage and unique tangy dressing became such a hit patrons bought it in plastic cups and even empty catsup bottles. Today it’s bottled and sold in groceries around the state, dressing up vegetables, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches and anything else its devotees can come up with.
